I will be redoing my porch ceiling damaged by the 3 hurricanes Central Florida had last year.

The drywall ceiling has gotten wet so it was stained, I painted this but wish to be removing all replacing it with a T & G v board. I wish to have a 45 degree design with a 90 degree recessed section so the 45 degree area will be lowered 3 1/2" so should I be screwing a 2 x 4 in the ceiling joice or adding a 2x6 along the ceiling joice for this propose?

I don't really understand what you're doing there, my apologies for that. But if you are trying to lower one end of a ceiling and not the other, and if the joists run the right way (i.e.-if one end of each joist is at the end you want to lower, and not running parallel with the end you want to lower), then you can just sister a 2x8 onto the existing joists with one end dropped however much you want to drop, and the other end flush with the original. If you're dropping 3.5"(if I read it right), 2x4's won't work as it would be off the original by the time you got to the other end. I don't think I would trust 2x6's either, 2x8 minimum is what I would suggest, then you'll have 4" sistered onto the original even at the lowered end.

Make sure you get all the new joists level with each other. Carefully get one in place on one end of the porch, then one on the other end. Put a nail into the side of each one(away from the center of the porch), and tie a string tightly between them. I say on the side because it will assure the string is touching the bottom of the joists.

goofy8,

I too am a little confused about exactly what you are wanting to end up with. Remove the water damaged sheetrock. (That was easy.) Now you'll see which way your joists run. (You probably already know that, but I can't see it!) Attach the T&G perpendicular to the joists in the are that you want to be "90 degrees". So far, so good.

Now, where you want the 45 degree T&G, add 2X4's perpendicular to the joists (parallel with the above mentioned T&G that you have installed at "90 degrees") But, you'll want to reduce the spacing of the 2X4's to 12" O.C. Now, when you install the T&G at 45 degrees, it will still be supported approx. every 16". It's just like running decking on a diagonal -- you have to reduce the joist spacing so that the deck boards aren't overspanned.

Ok, Sorry guys that I was not to clear. I try to clear it up some...

A.) shouldn’t add 2x4 straight up and down so that it stacked against the ceiling joist. This would be done by pre drilling holes then screwing with 5" screw.

B.) I should add a 2x8 next to the ceiling joist. So I could add the 3.5" down level sections.

C.) All T&G will be installed at 45 degree from these ceiling joist, except these one’s that will be installed at 45 degree from the one's that are lowered will be running the same way as the ceiling joists.

D.) The one running the same way as the ceiling joist will have installed 2x4 cross brace for nailing proposes.

E.) The T&G installed at 45 degree (C.) above) will have an end cross brace for nailing proposes.

F.) Insulation will be installed when this is done.

G.) All sheet rock will be removed.

H.) Should sheet rock be re-installed first for any reason? Noise? Or anything?
