I've cut into my cold air return to connect 2 panned out stud cavities. Inside the return is lined with 1 inch insulation to keep things quiet. I'd like to line my stud cavities with it to prevent possible "oilcanning". Home Depot and Lowes don't carry it. The local HVAC supplier carries it in bulk 100'x4', I only need 3'x7' . What is this stuff called and is there a way to get just a little bit?

Well I have never lined stud space for cold air. But if you want to go that way ask for the fiberglass Duct Board in 1" comes 4 X 10 you can cut it with a knife and tack nail it to the studs or up in the joist if you want.

I've never done such thing for home set up..
The sheetrock that going to be on both sides will absorbe(SP) the noise. If you have enough returns in the home, there shouldn't be any problems.. If there are few or undersized return already in the home, then you will get the air rush sound.

I neglected to say that only one side of the wall will be drywall. The other side (with the panning) will not be drywalled and left unfinished as it is in the furnace room. I don't have to drywall behind the panning do I?

I have panning on my back side (furnace room) and it's just fine..

A real simple way to get rid of the oil canning noise is to take a flat head screw driver and press hard enough to put a cross break in it. ( big X in the metal.) This is called a field cross break and it works real well.
