Hi,
Recently my in laws purchased a cottage (bungalow), and I have volunteered to refinish the basement. One of the major things I need to do is to remove a load bearing wall. The length of the segment that I want to remove is about 24 feet. The wall is directly under a supporting beam made up of 3 2x12s. I am guessing that if I put in support posts every 6 feet that it should be ok. The rough dimensions of the cottage is 36 feet (which is the direction the beam runs) by 24 feet. Does this sound right... should I be getting an architect to look at this?
Having said that I have never installed footings before, so pointers to any online step by step guides would be helpful (or should I get someone in to do this).

mrech, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
I would definately get an architech or engineer to check this out. There is certain criteria involved in removing loadbearing walls and also in installing the support footers. Good luck.
