I bought semi-gloss paint for my utility room, but later realized that a more durable gloss-coat finish would be better. Can I add a polymer to the paint I already have, or do I have to paint first, then paint over again with polyurathane?

Is this for a wall, woodwork, tabletop, what? It does make a difference to my advice.
