I am painting my dining room this weekend, and there are several small cracks in the ceiling and i'm not sure how to patch them.

The cracks are very long but thin, and it appears they have been patched before using mud and tape. They are fairly straight and some are perpendicular to others. I believe the ceiling is plaster.

My question is: should I just use patching compound for this, or use tape and some higher quality mud?

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Those cracks sound like the tape joints in a drywall ceiling. If the old tape is loose, you should pull it off and retape. Use a drywall knife flat up against the ceiling, it you can get it's edge to slide under the tape then it wasn't embedded properly and needs to be replaced. Here's a link to how-to info on taping drywall. http://doityourself.com/wall/tapingdrywalljoints.htm Good luck!
