I have 30 yr. old, brown aluminum siding I would like to paint white. How should I clean it? Do I need primer? What type of paint is best?

Basic surface preparation
As a general rule, every exterior surface you paint should include the following steps:
Remove all surface contamination, dirt, chalk, etc. by washing with an appropriate cleaner (especially in areas not exposed to direct weather such as under eaves and porch ceilings).
Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
Scrape and sand existing loose or peeled paint to a sound surface.
Glossy surfaces should be sanded dull using fine sandpaper or an abrasive cleaner
Remove sanding dust or cleaner residue.
Apply appropriate patching material to cracks, nail holes, or other surface imperfections.
Caulk around windows, doors and other openings with exterior caulk after spot priming any bare surfaces in these areas.
Special Prep For Vinyl:
Vinyl siding must be cleaned thoroughly by scrubbing with a warm, soapy water solution. Rinse thoroughly. Do not paint with any color darker than the original siding color. Painting with darker colors may cause the siding to warp. No primer is needed.
Just remember clean, dry, and dull.

On the aluminum siding you need to use a 100% acrylic latex primer.Sherwin-Willaims has a product called Pro-Block that is very good.If you have access to a Richards dealer their HolzoutII is the best.As to the topcoat in this case I would buy a name brand and get the best they have. The price of better paint is 25% above but IMHO seems to go farther and all in all labor factored in is the best way to go.
