View Full Version : Chain question (#35 vs #41)

I'm setting up a go-cart with a 8 HP 4 stroke engine. Having finally found centrifugal clutches for my engine's 1" shaft (seems everything is made with a 5/8" or 3/4" bore), I've got to choose between clutches conceived for #35 or #41 chain. I've got the size specs for both chain sizes but I don't know which to choose with regards to strength and "chain coming off" issues, etc. Any advice ?

The research that I have done points to #40/41 to be a stronger chain than #35. If this is incorrect, hopefully someone will correct me.
I plan to use #40 chain sprockets, etc..., in the cart I'm designing and building.

The higher the number, the heavier the chain and the increase in strength. Good luck with your project.

Bigger and stronger chain is nice, but...

Many racers with more power use 219 chain which is even smaller than #35.

If you look at a chain it is a series of straight segments. The chain goes around the sprocket almost like a tire with flat spots. A larger heavier chain has fewer segments per inch and does not make the bend around a small sprocket as well as a smaller chain with more links per inch. The smaller chain also has less mass so it is easier to accelerate it up to speed when coming out of a turn. The lighter chain also can change direction (going around the sprocket) easier/more efficiently.

If you are just running a cart in the yard I would go with the larger more durable chain. If you are racing and want the last smidge of speed than go with the smallest chain that can make it through the race without breaking. As a comprimise I'd use the #35. It is possibly the most popular size so you can find more clutches and sprockets.
