I have a sunroom that previous owners made part of the house. I want to tear out the aluminum walls to get rid of the heat loss/gain and change the windows. This room has a flat roof and to complicate things, we would like to expand the kitchen into it if it doesn't cost too much. Huge question, I know. I see two ways to go. First way: keep costs down, just replace the walls with wood frame. Second way: go for big remodel with new walls, expand kitchen, and extend angled roof to cover this part of the house.
Will both options require extensive costs for an architect?

I think you should talk to code there first. As to what you can do and then go from there.

Tyger52,
Since this is an existing structure, no need to contact the City first as who you hire to do the drawings will confirm any requirements over and above what is there now.
I would consider this,
If you are doing the work yourself, hire an architect or designer. Obviously, the designer would be cheaper but should be just as knowledgable. They will provide all the information necessary regarding Code, design and structure.
If you are hiring the construction work, the Contractor may have an in-house draftsman which reduces the cost of the above. If not, you still need blueprints for the city regardless what you do as there sounds like some structural changes.
Hope this helps!

My house is in Southern California, Orange County. Any tips for finding a good architect or designer? Does certification or anything make a difference?
