Before I try to humidify a 2 story brick home I'd be interested to see who has had success. .75 gallons of water per hour doesnt sound like enough to humidify 1800 square feet unless maybe it would run all of the time, should I add 2 units? I have very dry skin especailly in the winter and would only install a humidifier if it made a noticeable difference, and sometimes I would want to really crank it up. The storm windows are in good shape but they are older and there has to be a certain amount of "leakage" factored in through the window frames. Home Depot had a Honeywell for $180 but Aprilaire seems to be a popular unit, any suggestions for Chicago weather?

It should work out for you.. I have not heard anyone saying it didn't do anything for them..

How long on an avg does your furnace run per hour?

Check around and get a humidifier that has a higher out put General Aire, go up to a 21.3 gal per day out put.

If you get one don't get the mist spray type they get clogged and have problems. The one you saw is the better type bulky but they work great and will also lower your heating bill. The best setting will be 50-60% humidity but like temp. different people have their own preferrences. The seller or packaging should give you an ideal what size for your sq.footage home. Maybe drop by an hvac supply house they can be quite helpful.
