Sometimes I would like to tape a show from the TV and have always used the standard VHS tape. Are we there yet were there is a machine that uses a DVD disk yet inplace of the tape?

Yes. Sony, Magnavox, Panasonic, and others make set top dvd burners. Many models have a vcr so you can copy old tapes to dvd.
Panasonic has one tha also includes a hard drive that provides some of the features you get from a Tivo dvr.

Thanks I will have to check it out at the local electronics store as you can see I have not been out much looking at the new stuff. That would be great because I have a bunch of old movies in VHS format that I would like to put on disk.

Well, I thought of doing the same with my extensive VHS collection.
BUT, to go through all the hassle, and put 240 crappy resolution lines on to a dvd is really NOT worth it. VCR's are still available, and down to 50 bucks.
I've got Jordan in college, Super Bowls back to '81, the first Shuttle launch, etc. I'm not even thinking of converting. My old tapes play fine.
I want something now to archive HDTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's true about the crappy picture of VHS Vs DVD but the DVD is much more easy on space and it also works in my computer. Also a lot of the older movies are not on DVD so I cannot watch them except for when I am at home.VHS players are becoming more scarce. Also the price of blank CDs is pretty low.

The blank CD-RW that you use to put music on are not the same? Those are pretty cheap or do you need another kind to make movies I dont know. :(

You can make a VCD - video cd - on a CD-R. I wouldn't waste the time to make a vcd using a cd-rw disc. As you say, CD-Rs are pretty cheap, about 10 cents when you buy a spindle of 50 on sale.
To make a DVD, you need a DVD blank. A DVD-RW is different from a DVD+RW and both are different from a CD-RW.

It is possible to improve, slightly, the picture quality of a vhs tape when converting to dvd. Nero has controls for contrast, brightness, and color when you capture. There are some stand alone products, such as the Sima line, that also help with this.

I noticed there are some HDTV video cards coming on the market. It just might be possible to capture to pc.

Before trying to store much HD on a pc hard drive, upgrade to the biggest you can find. I think the TIVO HD DVR has a 240 gig HDD in it and it can only hold 35 hours of HD programming.
