Is it possible to manually switch on my steam furnace when the power is out? I have a Peerless Series 61 and as far as I can tell, it has no dependance on electricity except for the thermostat. Is this correct?

Or is it possible to have a battery backup that I can hook up when needed?

Any thoughts?

Your gas valve would be electrically operated but you could probably get a nice big UPS and power it for quite a while. Or get a small generator to put outside the window and run an extension cord in. All you need to do is put a receptacle in and a short cord with a male plug to power your system and then when you want to go to alternate power, just pull the plug and plug the boiler into your other source.
