Doen't sound like t'stat problem as long as burners are staying on. Is it very cold in the house? Where is the cold air return located?

house is warm and the returns are in the middle of the house right above the furnace

Well it sounds like the motor may be going off on thermal overload protection or the fan switch is failing. Is there any chance the return air duct has seperated someplace where the air is unconditoned and pulling in cool air

How's the air filter? Sounds like it's tripping on high limit.

replaced the filters this spring. blower motor was replaced in the last year.
there is also a woodstove attached to the vent system. the previous owner said it need a plentum. could the cold air from the woodstove be affecting it?
never did this the in the last 5 years. also dont use the woodstove.

If you changed your filter in the spring it's probably time to do it again unless it's a 4" media.

A regular filter should be changed every 30-60 days depending on how dirty it is.

You dont say where you are are how cold it is there . lots of time as we go into winter a blower will come on and off that way. Also you said wood stove where or how does the blower get it air ? Have you tried to reset the fan control to a lower temp there?
