I have a two-zone steam boiler. I'd like to replace the manual thermostats with programmable models. I need a three-wire thermostat. What models can handle this kind of system?

Thanks,

I'm not sure if you will find a 3 wire thermostat like you are looking for. I don't think Honeywell has one. You can install a small relay to do the closing of the valve for you and then you can use any thermostat you like. If you might consider that option, post back and I can explain it further.

I'm all ears. I had read about the need for a relay a while back when I tried to install a standard thermostat. I only read its literature after I installed the thing and discovered that the system wouldn't shut off with the new thermostat installed! I presume the zone valve is the thing up on the ceiling near the boiler (Burnham V86) that makes a funny noise when the burner kicks in or out, but I've never looked at it closely. I know how to switch the electric circuit off, and have done basic wiring, so I'm willing to have a go at it.

Thanks for your help!

I think your best choice for ease of installation would be the Erie Boiler Boss relay model SR-100. I haven't looked for an online source but I would think one is available. I can send you a diagram of how to wire and I think it would not be beyond the ability of anyone who can work with a light switch or replace a wall socket. Let me know if you are up to the task and we can proceed.
