I have an older Carrier Gas Furnace, the model number is 0585EC125-3. In the early morning hours and sometimes in the evening, the Furnace makes a loud "Grrrrrrrrr" sound, as though someone is moving heavy furniture accross the floor. The pilot light works and the burners seem to be burning properly. I suspect that it may be the blower, but I cannot be 100% sure.

Yesterday, I had a technician look at the furnace and of course the furnace was quiet and he informed me everything looked fine. However, later that evening it began again and then this morning.

Can someone tell me what troubleshooting steps to take to make this determination if it is the blower or not? Could it be the Thermastat?

If a blower unit has to be replaced is it usually feasible to do so, or should I look at purchasing another furnace?

Last question, what percentage of total cost of replacing a furnace is labor charged?

Any help would be appreciated.

Going by you numbers it looks like that furnace was built in th 5th month of 85' and is a 125,000 btu.

If thats right it's not far from the end of it's lifespan.

The noise you describe could very well be bearings in the blower motor or draft inducer motor if equipted.

At the same time though it could be a gas pressure problem. It would help if you could be at the furnace with the cover off when it acts up.

If it's in good shape I wouldn't hesitate to put a couple hundred bucks in it but not much more.

I haven't done my own business in several years but I know a few here still do so I can't help with the labor rate vs parts rate. I'de take a wild guess and say 60% - 70% is labor. But I may be way off.
