I have an 8 ft wide roller blind that has an unwound spring. I know how to rewind the spring, but I can't remember if the blind should be rolled up or unrolled completely before I rewind the spring and put the roller back into its brackets. Any advice would be appreciated.

The safest way to rewind a large shade roller is to leave on its brackets. Pull the shade material down.....remove the the roller and shade from the brackets and roll the material up onto the roller.....put the roller and shade back into the brackets and repeat the above until the spring has the necessary tension. How did the roller lose it's tension?

It was pulled down too far, and it would not roll up. When it was removed from the brackets, the spring unwound. I know it can be rewound with pliers, but I couldn't remember whether the blind should be rolled up or unrolled completely when rewinding. Your method sounds safer - I'll try it. Thanks.

Instead of using pliers, why don't you try a dinner fork? Just "wedge" 2 of the fork tines around the end of the roller and turn. You can spin it around as many times as you need, even if you use only one finger! Pull the fork off the end and you're in business!

The fork will work on smaller shades. An 8' roller is usually 1 1/2" in diameter with a very heavy spring so using a fork could pose a danger.

Definitely the best way to do it is to pull it down about 2 feet, take it off and roll it, and repeat.
