I have an HDTV-ready TV that supports 480p and 1080i HD inputs. The TV has a 4:3 ratio screen, but also has a feature that will change the picture ratio to 16:9. I just purchased a Samsung SIR T-451 over-the-air TV receiver. The instructions for the receiver state that for a 4:3 ratio screen, only the 480p output resolution should be used because use of the 1080i output may cause aspect ratio distortion. However, the instructions for the TV state to use the 1080i resolution setting on an HDTV receiver. In addition, the instructions for the receiver state that 480p will not provide as high a quality picture as 1080i. So I’m confused. What should be the proper settings?

If you watch 1/3 or more of your programming in HD, set the OTA receiver for 1080i, along with the TV. But you should still be able to change the ratio on the tv screen for SD if you like. It should have two or three setings and one will be more preferable by you.
None of the settings will harm anything - it is all user preference.
I have an Sony HD 16-9 tv, sat receiver set for 1080i. On sd programs I use a partial zoom to fill my screen. This one doesn't stretch as much as some settings.
