Morning all,

I recently had some windows replaced in my kitchen/dining room area.

The old, painted, inside window trim, was replaced with new OAK.

I need to paint this new oak so that it matches the rest of the wood work.

The final top coat will be a latex paint.

How do I "prep" this new wood before applying the final top coat of paint ?

I've always had old houses with painted trim so this is the first time I am dealing with NEW wood that needs to be painted.

Thanks in advance.

Prime your wood first. I prefer oil base because I feel it protects it better and the oil based primer sands out much smoother. But there are also some good latex primers. after the primer has dried overnight you sand the wood, putty your holes and caulk the cracks. Let the caulking set up overnight and then you are ready to paint.

Yep, I like Zinnser's BIN primer, it penetrates bare wood very well.
