I'm new to the painting world and was reading people's questions about priming. How do I tell if my walls are flat or satin? Gloss seems more obvious.

flat paint has no sheen at all and is not washable. If you wipe it with a damp rag it is possible to see the paint on the rag. Satin or eggshell finish has a dull sheen like an egg, and this finis is washable.
