View Full Version : Rainsoft Softener - low water pressure

I'm hoping someone can give me a quick answer! We have a 12 year old Rainsoft whole house system. Had them come do a repair last week due to the fact that we hadn't had to put salt in for about 5 months (although, I wasn't really noticing a problem with the water so I guess our water isn't that hard!). The unit was cycling fine. They replaced a broken o-ring, rebuilt the timer (don't know why, but he said it wasn't working right), and replumbed the drian (a code issue) $126. Now we have very low water pressure. When we put the unit on by-pass, pressure is fine. The guy came back out and said it must be coincidence, but it's probably the resin needs replaced. (we have seen a few black flecks in the water). Probably will be another $100+ (labor only).

My question...does this sound logical? Does it make sense to keep dumping money into the 12 year old system? I see a Sears unit for $600 - we could have paid for 1/2 that now.

Please help - he's supposed to come back tomorrow! thanks in advance!

The charges are inline but you're right, even though you will have new resin, you have a control valve that is not that great quality wise and has been repaired but not rebuilt. You can buy very high quality softeners over the internet for the same amount you mention at Sears but they can't compare to the quality on the internet. As you see the control valve is the most important component of a softener, I suggest either the Clack WS-1 and Fleck 7000 control valves as the best for DIYers.
