Would like to hear the pros & cons of turning off the water supply hoses connected to my washer. I've always turned them off to reduce chance of hose failure. Yesterday, I was told to NEVER turn them off, it damages the the water inlet control on the washer. Would appreciate any thoughts.

Hi Spamwell,
-I've never heard of anybody doing that. I'd imagine that at least you'd be wearing out your shutoff valves which are more costly to replace than the hoses. Modern washer hoses are extremely robust, and while I've been called to replace or clear the screens at the washer end of these, I've never seen a hose actually break due to pressure. I also can't imagine how either way would damage the inlet valve, it's just a simple pair of solenoids.

I once had a washer hose split and it sprayed water all over the basement.
For vacations or even weekend trips we did turn the supply off after that incident.
But a few years ago I replaced the supply lines with those steel web reinforced supply lines. I haven't really fooled with the valves since.
