Lately I have noticed black soot residuals on the exterior portion of the tank. It appears to be originating from the burner access panel and leaving a vertical trail of about 2 feet high from the panel opening.

Is this any concern and what might be the reason for this. The unit is approximately 7 years old. Any thoughts on a remedy or ?

It sounds like there is a problem with the air to gas ratio. The burner is not burning "clean" and the soot is leaving the burner compartment. Check your burner to make sure it is clean (you can blow it out with canned air for computers). Make sure there is sufficient air to the burner.(not blocked by a door or new enclosure) Check your flue for blockages. Good luck.

If this is a newer sytle water heater you have to pull burner and wash with water. Sounds like burner is dirty and burning yellow. Also both the inner and outer burner comparment doors must be in place. Check for soot in the internal flue. You probably should have a dealer or gasco look at this ASAP
