View Full Version : Heating Question
I have two 4" round heating ducts that run inside two seperate joist spaces in my basement to a vent in our foyer and to a vent in the living room. The problem is that these vents are on the same wall and therefor, the vent that is further into the basement space takes a duck down under the joist and the then tucks back up into the other joist space to continue it's run. This presents a problem of a small area that would require a soffet or something to hide it. Is there any way to combine these two vents into a single run?
Moving this to a more appropriate forum for a better answer.
Seems like if they could be they would be. Are you sure one isn't a return air? If the grill on the "vent" is just open and can't be adjusted shut it's a return air and can't be joined with the heat run.
If both are heat runs (or both are returns for that matter) it seems like they should be combinable (is that a real word?). You'd probably have to go to larger pipe (6") and step down to 4 after the first run comes off to maintain pressure.
I am sure that they are both vents, as they both run to the same main trunk. Seemed odd to me that they were run this way. Maybe I will look into replacing it and stepping it down.

Its hard to get just what you have there when you cant see it. You say that the 4" pipe is each in its own joist space. first Id ask why? two 4 " pipe fit in a joist space. Are like said aa 6" off the trunk line. Then drop down to a 4" after you take off the first 4".
I might see the 4" for a small foyer. But I cant see a 4" run to a living room. Is this a jet pac of some kind what are all the other pipes here.
