I just replaced the drive belt on a 15 year old Speed Queen washer. It got real hot and darn near started a fire (very hot, melted, lots of smoke). I replace it, it works fine for a while but a month or two later, the same thing happens. Everything else looked okay from what I could see. Any ideas on what could actually be wrong? I assume know that the belt is braking becuase of some other component it's interfacing with, correct?

Thanks,
Biederboat

Sounds like you're on the right track , I'd assume that too. Try checking all the pulleys, tensioner etc for free movement, also clean any gunk off them in case the belt is sticking.

Is the washer noisy while in spin?- sounds like a jet engine on takeoff? My experience with these machines is that the tub seal leaks and water gets into the bearing which corrodes it which causes it to drag and put too much load on the belt. I assume you are usimg the belt made for your washer and NOT an automotive belt? The belt is the clutch and is made with a special surface that allows it to slip on at the beginning of the spin cycle when the tub is still full of water. If the bearing is shot, start shopping for a nice Kenmore, Roper, Kitchenaid or Whirlpool TOP LOADING washer. Forget the front loaders- too much trouble.
