I have a 5-year old Kenmore fridge, top freezer (w/ice maker which isn't in use or hooked up) and the heat changer coils on the bottom by the floor. The model no. from the owners manual is 106.70852990.

3 months ago our power was off for four days due to a hurricane and since then the refigerator has developed a violent shudder whenever the motor shuts off. It's really loud, kind of CRU-DUNK!! like a fender bender in traffic, loud enough to make you drop your teeth.

A neighbor suggested I unplug the fridge for six hours as he thought maybe the refrigerant lines had got a bubble or a lock in them from the power outage. The unit ran quiet for a few hours, but as soon as it was cold again, the shudder came back.

My son was here and he checked the rubber cushions under the compressor and said they were OK. The next week he used a hammer and piece of 1X2 to tap the frame looking for anything loose, but found nothing. He left some wooden shims underneath the unit to press against the bottom and deaden the noise, but that just changed the sound from hollow to flat like a hammer knock. He also tried loosening up the bolts holding the compressor but that made it worse and he was afraid of damaging the gas lines if they moved too much.

My son wants to remove all the insulation in the bottom so he can see how the bottom is attached to the frame. But I thought I would ask the forum first in case there is a simple fix. Sears wants $200 to look at it and I won't pay that to fix a fridge that was $499 new. I am an old lady but not afraid of a wrench, so I hope the experts reading here will have an idea on this.
