We are first time home owners that recently bought a home built in 1950 that is on city water but has a septic. The basement flooded years ago.
The water in the sump pump smells sulfur like, spreading through the house. the pump is working properly. earlier today i cleaned the well and removed debris and took out the pump while cleaning. the well seemed to have no definite bottom. the sump pump was sitting on a few layers of bricks allowing 12 inches of standing water below the pump. there are two six inch pipes on either side of the well that constantly trickle in water. can anyone tell me if any of this is normal? how do we get rid of the smell? should we buy a well liner and lid? should we submerge further to get rid of standing water?

I would try removing a couple of courses of brick, to minimize the water in the sump well. Also, add a cup of household bleach to clean up the water somewhat, and maybe (maybe?) eliminate or decrease the smell.

If the house has a french drain, depending on how much rain you have had, and the current level of the water table, it is not unusual to see water trickling into the sump.

You might consider adding a plastic lid to the sump, to decrease the circulation of any odors (plus a fall hazard).
