View Full Version : Please advice: Good Water softener
Hello:
I am looking for some advice for my new construction home.
Here are my details:
Members in home: 3
Hardness of city water : 20
Home units: 2.5 Bath, Kitchen, washer, Dryer, and Dishwasher.
I have two water softener in my mind.
1. Kenmore UltraSoft 180 Water Softener.
2. WaterBossŪ Model 700.
I am kind of confused which one is good or atleast better for my requirements, I would appreciate if some one can help me in purchasing the right softener.
Thanks for your time in advance.
Regards,
MBaig

Both are proprietary with nonstandard control valves and resin tanks IIRC the Waterboss tank correctly. You can only get parts and service from them/their dealer. That's not a good position to be in in many cases.
Most problems with a softener is caused by something going wrong with the control valve. So buying a softener with the highest quality control valve is a good idea. IMO the best control valves on the market today are the Clack WS-1 and the Fleck 7000. And if you buy over the internet, you won't pay any more than the big box stores charge for their lesser quality softeners, and in some cases, you'll pay less plus get the correctly sized softener with the best salt efficiency.

At www.no-salt.com, a company "Safewater Softeners, LLC, Fayetteveille, Arkansas, 479.527.6368", claims a unit that does not need what normal softners use. Their claim is "NO MOVING PARTS, NO TIMERS, NO BACKWASHING AND NEVER NEEDS SALT, ELECTRICITY OR MAINTENANCE!"
Now this reminds me of that claim, IF IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS.
Furthermore, this unit is 13" high, 7.5 " wide, and weighs only 16 pounds.
They offer a 6 months money back guarantee and 5 year warranty.
I need softwater, and I need a system that provides softwater. Does anyone know anything about this unit?

To soften water means to remove the calcium and magnesium from the water. Magnets, souped up catalytic or not and/or electronic anti-scale and scale prevention devices don't do that so they aren't water softeners and thereby they are not an alternative to softeners. Especially if you want to do more than prevent scale formation which is only a small part of all the problems hard water causes.
