I am having a problem with dust throughout my house. I read the previously posted questions and answers and I know I need to change to a better filter. My question is this: My heating unit is upstairs. THe main vent (?) is in the hallway (where I put the filter) in the ceiling. If I wanted to clean the ducts could I do it myself? What do I clean? Where is it located? When you say 'clean the ducts' does it mean the duct work through out my house or certain areas? ( My air conditioner unit is outside) THank you

I feel you dont get a whole lot out of cleaning the ducts. Always use a good pleated filter up to about a MERV 5. There also is a spray that you can put on the intake side of the new filter just very light .Helps a lot. When the AC is on that is the best filter there is its wet all the time. Now that you are on heat a lot of this dust can be comeing from the coil there now that it is all dryed off. Now there is a place to check and see just how clean it is. Also a new filter every 30 to 90 days helps. If you use a cheap filter you will have dust.

You can try to clean them but you won't be able to do a good job. Real duct cleaners that try to be professionals spend alot of money on their equipment and can prove they are clean using a video camera and a little robot that drives down the duct work recording the before and after difference. Ask around you will find someone that has this equipment. May cost up to $500 but if done right and install filter grills your problems is fixed and no more duct cleanings needed. Look on internet for a duct cleaning equipment some companies will even let you attend free weekend class cause they feel if they train you you'll buy their equipment so class is free. Not to meantion you will be as knowledgable if not more so then most duct cleaners. I highly recommend this knowledge is money. I went to one about 15 years ago I got a free motel room out of the deal too so it was kinda like a mini vacation all I had to spend was gas money to get there. No obligation to buy equipment.
