I have a couple of holes in the ceiling of my basement. They are over the ductwork/venting so I'm not sure how to patch them. All of the instructions I've found say I should use drywall screws, but there is nothing to attach them to there. The two holes are pretty small, the largest one being about 10 inches by 4. Any suggestions on the best way to fix them?

You have to put up whats called backing first. Get a piece of 1x4 or 2x4 and cut it 14 inches long(for 10 inch hole). Put it in the hole so it rests on the drywall. Screw through the drywall into the backer board. 2 or three screws on each end. Now you have something to screw your new patch to.
