I just purchased a home and it has a Watersoft, Inc softner installed. First off, I've know nothing at all about water softners. On the back of the unit, it has 'salt setting 15lb', catalog #AS32TP, Serial # 0303991-6. Anyone know where I can get the literature for this unit? Any idea how in the heck it works. There is a big, blue tub that has a little bit of water in the bottom....

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The big tub is what contains the brine that periodically cleans your unit. The brine is made by adding salt into the tub. The tub should usually be about 1/2 full of salt just covered by water. When the unit auto cleans, Usually 2-3 times a week) it will suck brine out of the tub to clean the media in the tank. After a cleaning cycle this brine is ejected down a pipe to the drain and more water is pumped into the brine tank to refill it. Where the service pipe enters the unit there will be a valve handle usually saying 'Service' or 'Bypass'. Somewhere on the front or top is a controller that can take many forms. This is where you set your cleaning time and adjust for amount of usage.
This is a complex unit, I would get the manual before touching it.
Good luck with it,

I've visited the website and requested a manual. Can you explain to me how this works though? What kind of salt do I put in the tub? Where is it purchased? How to I put water in the tub? Again, I have no idea about one of these......

Thanks,

Dave

You get conditioning salt, usually at your local farm feed store. there are different grades, and #2 is generally a good place to start. Here it cost 6.99 a 50 lb bag. For a start put 2 bags in the brine tank and cover it with water with hose or bucket. (This is NOT how it's supposed to work, as I said earlier, the filter should refill the brine tank, but apparently you have a fault which can't be resolved till you get the manual.)

To tell you how it works you have to know what control valve you have. Do a search for softeners and look at pictures to see if you see yours.

As to how a softener works:
