The New (6 months old) pilot light not stay lit and I have to re-light
the thing everytime I want hot water (following the instructions on tank).
Sometimes it takes about 10 tries to get the thing started. Had Sears out and
they messed around with it finally told me it was an improper install. Well
that was last month and I still have the same problem. House was built 1952
and pipe connection is not new. I banged on connection and sometimes this
works to reignite pilot.
Is it the old copper pipe or gas on off valve at the wall causing this problem
or could it be something else?
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

What exactly are they stating is the "improper" install?

All they did was relight it but it did not stay on after they left.
Invoice just said "Correct Improper Install" probably because they
didnt know what the problem is.

Contact the local plumbing inspector; all water heater installs through the big box stores have to be inspected by the state.

The store you bought it from is probably pocketing the inspection fee they charge you and throwing the heaters in no matter what code violations exist.

They will have to pull 2 permits; one for the way it is now, then one once the repairs have been made.

Plus, you will probably get someone in big trouble, but you have a right to have the state inspect your water heater as a homeowner, it protects not only you and family, but the structure you live in, and the installer who put it in.
