this area is a traffic area. and more than likely a focal point of your room. get it done right. That being said, if you must "do it yourself", i will assume you have a wood floor and the carpet is padded. Make the cut out a good 2 inches short on 3 sides., i.e. a 2'x6' cut out will be cut out 1'10" x5'8". Make (2) 45 degree relief cuts on the inside corners (stop short of the final tile corner by a good half inch for tucking) Cut your padding out and go to town on your install (carefull not to damage your carpet) Place tackless about a pencil thickness away from your tile/stone (teeth pointing inward) restaple the pad up to the tackless and cut it. Stretch the carpet back on the tack and cut and tuck. Or...you have a couple inches there now to turn and tack if you want to. Of course you can border in wood or use many different transitions available....GOOD LUCK!

I always like to fold or roll the carpet back, from a close corner of the room, to expose my work area. Then after your done, nail tackstrip around the tile, leaving a 3/8" gap to tuck the carpet into. Then roll or fold the carpet back and reinstall, cutting out, stretching and tucking, your tiled area as you stretch.
If you try and just cut a spot out of the carpet, It may be too big, then what. Or you can do like eplain said and cut it full, but then it is in the way of your work.
