I have an old vanity that I would like to refinish. Problem is that the top has formica attached. Can I remove this without destroying the wood underneath? If so, how?
Don't know what kind of wood it is.

Any help is appreciated!!!

HPH:

If you're talking about one of the kidney shaped vanieties from the 40's and 50's, I don't think it's worth the effort. However...

You'll need a loose edge to start with. Acetone will probably dissolve (slowly) the contact cement used to apply the laminate. It can also be used to clean up the wood underneath. You'll probably ifnd the wood unappealing esthetically, and want to put something back over it, probably a veneer.

OR -

You can just plan to veneer over the laminate and leave it where it is. A thorough sanding will prep the surface for a veneer application. Contact cement is the adhesive of choice in this instance. Top veneer is applied first, then the edge, then the veneer is trimmed to fit using a router with a laminate edge bit (It has a 7 degree slope to leave a slight angle).

Your choice...
