What's the best way to close open-backed stairs? We want to turn the basement into our son's playroom, but don't like the idea of him going up and down open-backed stairs. I'm interested in knowing the best option(s), but also the least-expensive option(s)...

JAZ714, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
You could cut plywood to box in the stairwell back. Drywall would work also. Another thing would be to use large head nails (roofing nails) and nail a carpet to the back of the stairs. Others may have more ideas so watch this post. Good luck.
