i have a light colored 15+ y.old dining table that i would like to refinish, but i can't tell if its wood, or veneer, or what. i like the idea of the new handpainted furniture w/ the floral, intricate designs. how do i go about redoing the finish? how can i tell what i'm dealing with. i like the look of cream colored whitewashed wood, with the designs later stenciled on.

You can get the look you want without worrying about what's in the table. The process is a little arduous, but not beyond the reach of even a novice willing to put in some time and patience.

Get a copy of Bob Flexner's Book "Understanding Wood Finishing" - it's less that $20.00 and worth twice the price. He goes into faux finishes and whitewashes in a no-nonsense step-by-step manner.
