I have an older KitchenAide dishwasher model # KDS-17A ML 34012 that has a soap door that is not opening. I believe there is a bi metal strip that releases the spring loaded door. I can tell that the door sping is broken or not connected from just working it, as there are two doors side by side for the soap and anti water spot liquids. What is the most effective way to get to this mechanism? I dont want to take the door or washer apart any more than I have to!

It appears from looking at pictures. you will indeed have to take the door apart to access the detergent cup opening mechanism. It sounds relatively easy to do.You need to take out the screws holding the door together(a second pair of hands looks necessary unless you take the door off). Seperate the 2 halves to gain access to the cup switch. I would take the switch to a appliance repair(previously called with model number to assure they have the part), compare them and make sure they are the same.
Dissconnect power source before attempting any repairs.
Good luck and post back

Four sheet metal screws removed from the inside of the door, let the front of the door cover be slid out and down from the door, exposing the two bi-metal devices that release the spring loaded doors. One of them was bad, and I ordered it from a local appliance parts center. Should have it back in operation next week when the parts gets here!
