I have stripped and sanded my white oak mantel and would like to stain it. My local painter said I need to condition the wood for the stain to take evenly. What is wood conditioner, where do I find it and do I need to do this?

Wood conditioner can be found in the area where you buy stains. It is clear and its purpose is to allow the woods to take stain more evenly. It is mainly used on soft woods with varying density like pine. I have never used it on oak.

As usual, R.L. hit it right on the head. Wood conditioner on oak? I've never used it on oak either, but it can't hurt.
