I have a simple pine table that I want to do in a faux black oriental-style lacquer. Does anyone have any suggestions in how I should go about getting that ultra-shiny finish?

There's really only one 'secret' to obtaining a mirror like finish - one of those you look down into and feel like you're looking into a well - SMOOOOOOOTHNESS!

Frankly, I don't do many of that type. When I do, I charge extra, because it is extra work.

I sand the top (successively) with 400, 600, 1000 and 1200 grit sandpaper, then use a buffer to bring out the shine.

All is for naught, however, if the surface has any imperfections or is not absolutely smooth.
