Is there any way to stain a paint grade wood baseboard trim. This moulding has different shades of wood joined together with a finger or dove joint. Is there any way I can get a stain to go on evenly? I really love the look of stained mouldings throughout the house and I really don't want to paint it. Can anyone help?

Stephen:
The only way to do what you want that I can think of is to apply a faux or fake finish. Bob Flexner, in his book "Understanding Wood Finishing", covers this topic quite well.
Applying any standard stain will only result in accenting the uneveness of the grain (as well as the finger joints) you mentioned.
Maybe one of the readers will have a suggestion.
