I have an ancient teak coffee table, cannot find anything I like better, but would like to
spruce it up a bit,and reduce the ravages of time,i.e. glass rings, salsa stains sweaty heels etc, have tried so called overpriced teak oil in the past which tends to leave a sticky residue. Is tung oil and fine steelwool, the answer ? Regards

Coolie:

An 'oldie but a goodie', eh?

Paint thinner and steel wool (00 grade) first. Clean the entire table completely, and let dry over night. Any stains, rings, water marks, etc., bleach - wood bleach (not clorox) - available from your paint store.

THEN tung oil, applied according to directions on the product.

Be aware that tung oil finishes common on the open market may CONTAIN pure tung oil, but they are not 100% tung oil and nothing else. If you really want a durable, easily applied finish, use 100% pure tung oil. The web site listed below has it - about $20.00 a quart by the time you pay shipping and handling, but well worth it.
