A dining room hutch with a dark matte finish has stood in direct sunlight for a lengthy period. Parts of the finish have faded considerably. Is there a product that will restore some of the former beauty or make the faded area less noticeable?

Donm:

Unfortunately, what has faded is not the finish, but the stain in the wood under the finish. Two possible solutions, one of which you can do, the other requires a professional shop.

1) You can strip the piece, bleach it out, restain, and refinish.

2) Talk to a competent refinisher about applying a 'toner' - lacquer with color added to blend in the faded areas, then respraying the entire piece to restore the sheen.

If you can see a definite line between faded and non-faded areas, this latter method will not work - Sorry.

Thanks for yoour help George. There are definite lines on the wood so it looks like the suite will have to be restained and refinished.
