I refinished a light maple dresser about eight years ago with a rub in type wax. I did not do like they said and rub it again every couple years. My daughter just left for college and I noticed there is a water stain from a plant that sat on the dresser. I have sanded it, used water to clean it and the stain is lighter but still there. I fear it is too deep to sand it away totally. I have heard something about using bleach to remove or lighten water stains? I am not sure if this would work since it is a light maple. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix the problem?

Taresa:
Bleach is the answer - but not your laundry bleach. You need a bleach made specifically for wood, which should be available at a good paint store or home center near you.
You'll have to remove all remaining paste wax first, then follow the instructions on the package. The wax can be removed with paint thinner.
Be sure to bleach the entire surface, and nopt just the water mark, so the finished color will be even.
