sbeswick, Welcome to the DIY Forums.
The leak may not be AT the fireplace. Since you have pretty much covered everything there, it may be a roof leak that merely uses the chimney as an escape route. I have rarely found a roof leak where the water appears. It seems to always have run from somewhere else and then dripped where I saw the leak. Check upslope from the chimney. Good luck.

Is there a cricket behind the chimney? Does is leak with snow, or rain or both? Any icing behind the chimney? What's uphill from the chimney?

i in uk so no crickets! only had rain so not sure re snow-but below roof slates chimney is dry on outside brick ,and this is in loft area above room where water stains on wallpaper? so i assume water is coming down inside of chimney brick and bridging across to exterior surface where wallpaper is.thanks
uphill from chimney is @7ft to long side of roof ridge-no obv damage or cracks etc
