I recently bought a small walnut table at an antiques shop and removed and replaced the veneer on the top of the table (there was water damage). After I sanded the entire piece, I stained it with a mahogany stain (hoping to make it match other furniture in the room). Now, I am somewhat dissatisfied with the results, as the top (virgin walnut veneer) seems a lighter shade (and "redder") than the body. Can I darken the top (perhaps with a second coat of stain of a browner/darker shade)?

Robinne:
Don't know what the original stain was, but Min Wax makes a color in oil base stains called "Jacobean". In the can it looks like an almost black/brown. It's actually a brown with a greenish cast - sort of like the artist color raw umber. I've used this a number of times to 'tone down' reds and darken overall colors.
Don't apply it full strength - cut it at least 50-50 with paint thinner. You can always go back and apply a second coat if needed.
