older style ge.start relay will not pull in.motor hums because run winding is energized.if relay is shook or turned upside down momentarely(to make up contacts)motor will start & run normally.run winding & relay coil are in series which indicates timer, relay, motor & wiring harness are all ok.why is the relay not energizing?changed relay with known good one but same problem.

With your ohmeter or multimeter set at RX1, check terminals M and LS,you should get continuity. At L and S, you should get resistance (varies), without removing your leads, turn relay upside down and you should now get continuity. If it fails this, you need a new relay. :( .
PS, don't forget, the old spare part you have may ALSO be faulty, and misleading you
Keep at it , if you're into this, there's not much you can't fix.

These collect moisture and will freeze up if the machine has not been used for awhile. They cost about $20. If you shake it, you should hear it rattle, if not it is frozen.
They are about 1 inch square and are usually located at the upper left corner inside the front panel. They are wrapped in copper wire.
They can be dis-assembled and cleaned and put back together in about 10 minutes.
