Hello, have a 1400 sq ft split level home. Furnace is in the Basment , along with the only return vent for the furnace which is 100,00 btu. It gets a bit loud when running. In the summer you can tell the diffrence in temp on every level. I am going to put a return vent in the upper level about a foot from the celing. My question is approx what size should the vent be. I have seen vents I can use that are approxixmitly 6 inches. will have to travel about 40 ft to attach it to the existing return. will this be ok?

Thanks ,
Alan

i'm curious....

I have a split level as well, and wondering how you are going to run the extra return duct? I want to do the same, just can't figure where to run the duct, without it being to obtrusive.

Its all in what you can get up there are say put up there for a cold air return.I have panned the bottom of the stairs and cut in a cold air grill there in the top riser. Just round pipeback to the cold air drop will work.Might go to www. hartandcooley.com check for grills and registers.
