I have a kenmore water softener which is appox. 20 years old. I have recently notice my water pressure is dropping through out my house plumbling. When I switch the water softener to bypass my water pressure through out my house is normal. When the water softener is entered in the system my water pressure drops to the point where several faucets running at the same time is just above a trickle. What is plugging up in my water softener? Is it worth repairing or time for a new unit? Thanks.

If there is a top basket in your softener, it could be blocked. Or the bottom basket is. Or the resin is clumped. The unit isn't near as efficient as a new and metered/demand regenerated unit would be and by the time you put the time and money in fixing it, you'd be much better off with a new one. Just buy the right new one; a nonproprietary low cost for replacement parts and no special tools required to easily replace a part you can buy from many sources. IMO that is a softener with a Clack WS-1 or Fleck 7000SE control valve.
