HI,
tore down sheetrock from an exterior wall and see that it has old wooly looking insulation from when the house was built (50's or so) . is it a good idea to replace the insulation with some home depot product while i have the wall open, and should i remove that old insulation or just install on top of it.

You dont say how much room you have there in the studs.If no paper are anything on it Id say yes just put new on top of it if you want paper side to the room when done Id put a 4 mil poly over it then the new drywall.

not to much room but if i squeeze it in itll fit, is that ok?
or is it useless to have it there and just put new fiberglass insulation on the wall.
i have never done this put i've looked around and seems pretty simple when the wall is open, just staple em on right?

If you dont have more room dont put more on top and press it in thats a NO NO. You can take it all out put new R13 up with paper to the room side staple it inside the studs.Then we still put the 4 mil poly over it, then the drywall

you said to use r13, i live in NY and the winters are getting colder, is r13 sufficient?
when i go to the depot, what kind of 4 mil poly should i purchase (dimensions,brand) to facilitate installation.

The R 13 will fit inside a 2X4 stud . The 4 mil poly, get the clear and in a roll size that will work out best for you. Dont need a lot of staples for it.Just so it hangs there when you go to put up the drywall is all..

Ed, I thought 6 mil was needed.
Regardless, I agree. R13 will be ok, especially if that's all that will fit. If you were to get R-19 then squeeze it in, you're defeating its purpose anyway, and it's useless. Go with R-13.
