View Full Version : Painting finish over varnished wood

Hi all,

We just bought an old house that has brought me back to this site often.

My next project includes our wood hand-rails and doors (interior) that have an old varnish finish. It seems rather difficult to strip the varnish finish off our handrails and doors - too many intricate moldings and curves. I've seen a paint-type finish that actually has brush-like strokes in it to mimic a woodgrain finish. Is this difficult to apply? What is it actually called? Anyone ever attempt this type of finish over a wood varnish?

Thanks in advanced and I look forward to your replies.

Rob

there is a method by which you apply a gel stain with a tool called a 'graining tool' to create a faux wood grain. from what i've heard, it's much more difficult to do than the commercials (Zar) portray. and that's on a flat surface. if you've got curved surfaces & mouldings, i think it would be next to impossible to do, and have look good.

i suppose you could give it a try, though. if it's apparent that it's not going to be the result you want, you can always wipe it off or strip it.

Have you tried sanding it really well and applying a fresh coat of a compatiable varnish or polyurethane? You might be very surprised at how much this can improve the appearance.
