I removed the carpet in my old house to expose the hardwood floors. The house was built in 1939 and the carpet pad was glued down. In addition to this there is no subfloor. The hardwood was laid directly over the beams. I was wondering if there is any way to remove the stains from the carpet padding. i have tried scraping it off as well as sanding. I was just looking for any other ideas or tips you may have. the hardwood is beautiful in some places and I would like to have the whole floor look as nice.

I had a simular situation. I hired a professional and let them refinish the floor. The carpet stains / glue marks come right off with there industrial sanders. I tried sanding a few areas before and got the carpet glue off but it was very time consuming. I'm just a dyslfr but this is one job that is best left to a professional.
