I have to replace the tile in the shower and i can't figure out how to get the diverter valve out or the knobs off.
All the fixtures are old American Standard stuff. I'm guessing the diverter valve has to be unscrewed from the pipe but how to you put a wrench on it without destroying it? The knobs are the old chrome 4 pointed handles. I'm assuming the H and C caps come off with a screw behind them but how? they have a bit of a knurled edge to them. would they unscrew or is it likely a pressure fit?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the screws out of the handles, now use a tool called a handle puller, and a tool called stem sockets, these tools are cheap and you find them and any plumbing store.

I'll pick up those tools tomorrow. Still doesn't quite answer my questions of how to get to the screws and how to take the diverter off.

P.S. that's just nasty. funny. but nasty.

Screw holds the handle on stem, look for a removable button on the front of the handle.

Likely a pressure fit, I use a pocket knife to pry them off. Then follow Plumber2000's posts.
